Climate change
Climate change management
Managing climate-related aspects is part of the Company’s business strategy and one of the high-priority topics in the Klabin Sustainable Development Goals. Risk management and impact mitigation resulted from CO₂ emissions are guiding principles for the Company, which continually seeks opportunities to strengthen its position as a low-carbon business that is resilient to possible climate emergency scenarios. Governance of this issue takes place in an integrated manner, involving executive leadership, committees and managerial areas (see figure below).
Klabin’s climate commitment extends to 100% of executive leaders, as well as managers, coordinators and specialists. Accordingly, 20%* of their performance-based pay is linked to sustainability targets (involving climate, water, community relations, diversity and safety).
* 10% of performance-based pay is linked to climate, water, community relations and diversity indicators; while another 10% is related to safety.
New commitments validated by science
An important milestone for the Company in its decarbonization strategy was the approval by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) of new absolute greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. These targets were submitted in 2023, based on Klabin’s Climate Transition Plan, considering the objective of limiting the increase in the Earth’s temperature to 1.5ºC. Approved in December 2024, the new commitments represent an even more ambitious contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change, reaffirming the Company’s engagement and proactive role in the development of a sustainable future.
New targets:
Scopes 1 and 2
Reduce absolute¹ Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, compared to 2022 baseline.
Scope 3
Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030.
NetZero
Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 90% in the same period, compared to 2022 baseline.
¹ The former targets were measured in kilograms of CO2 equivalent (kgCO2eq) per metric ton of products. Following the review, the reduction will be measured only in kilograms of CO2 equivalent (absolute emissions), without dividing this amount by the number of metric tons of products.
NOTE: The approved targets consider emissions related to the Energy and Industrial scope. The FLAG targets will be submitted for approval as soon as the SBTi guidelines are published and available for consultation.
